Elias Jengo

Professor Elias Jengo stands as a towering figure in Tanzania's art scene, particularly renowned for his contributions in the post-Independence period. His journey into art education led him to prestigious institutions including Makerere University in Kampala and Kent State University in Ohio, culminating in post-graduate studies at Sir George Williams University, now known as Concordia University, in Montreal. His commitment to art education extended into a longstanding tenure at the University of Dar es Salaam's Department of Fine and Performing Arts, where he played a pivotal role in nurturing the talents of many young artists.
Jengo's artistic legacy dates back to the 1960s, with his paintings being a staple in international exhibitions over the decades. His art, characterized by its reflection of Tanzanian culture and history, adorns various public institutions and spaces throughout the country, marking him as a significant cultural figure. His expertise and influence were further recognized when he served as a Fulbright scholar-in-residence at Kent State University at Stark, Ohio, between 2004 and 2005, solidifying his status as a key player in the global art community and an ambassador of Tanzanian art and scholarship.
