Francisco Vidal

Francisco Vidal, born in Lisbon, Portugal, in 1978, is a dynamic artist whose life and work span continents, residing and creating between Luanda, Angola, and Lisbon, Portugal. Vidal's educational journey is marked by significant achievements, including an MFA from Columbia University in New York in 2010, a BA in Fine Arts from Escola Superior de Artes e Design in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, in 2002, and participation in the Independent Study Programme at Maumaus School of Visual Arts in Lisbon in 2005.

Vidal is renowned for his vibrant paintings and drawings, characterized by their energetic use of color and pattern on handmade paper or canvas. His works, often assembled into larger installations, are a playful fusion of diverse aesthetic elements, ranging from Cubism and African wax-print textiles to 1980s hip-hop culture, contemporary graffiti, and street art. The son of Angolan and Cape Verdean parents, Vidal's art thoughtfully explores the diaspora experience, weaving together stories and identities born from his cross-cultural heritage. His work critically examines colonial legacies, focusing on the repercussions of labor practices, conflict, and violence.
