About the Artist

Geoffrey Mukasa, born on June 21, 1954, in Kampala to Rose Mary Wasswa and Dr. Ssembeguya, was a descendant of Sir Apollo Kaggwa, a significant figure in Uganda's political history and Prime Minister of Buganda from 1890 to 1926. Mukasa's early life was influenced by the regal surroundings of the Buganda Kingdom's palace, where he spent part of his childhood.

Mukasa's educational journey began in Kampala, where he attended primary and secondary school from 1961 to 1973. In 1976, he aimed to further his education at the London College of Arts and Crafts but faced visa obstacles that prevented him from entering the UK. Undeterred, Mukasa pursued his passion for art in India, where he enrolled at the University of Lucknow, earning a Bachelor of Fine Art in 1980.

Upon returning to Uganda in 1981, Mukasa served as a graphic designer with the Ministry of Information and Uganda Television. It was during this period that he honed his skills in drawing and painting, collaborating with esteemed Ugandan artists such as Romano Lutwama, Fabian Mpagi, and Eli Kyeyune. Mukasa's commitment to his art made him a full-time artist for over two decades, earning him recognition both in Uganda and internationally.

Mukasa's legacy is marked by numerous solo and group exhibitions. His solo exhibitions include memorable shows at the Tulifanya Gallery in Kampala, Uganda, from 1997 until his passing in 2009, and his posthumous 'In Memoriam' exhibition in 2011. His involvement in group exhibitions spanned globally, from the Gallery Lumiere d’Afrique in Brussels to the World Bank Art Collection in Washington, D.C., showcasing the depth and breadth of his work.

Geoffrey Mukasa's artistic journey came to an end in 2009 at the age of 55, leaving behind a rich legacy and two daughters. His contributions to the art world continue to be celebrated, reflecting the vibrant spirit and cultural heritage of Uganda.
