About the Artist

Jude Kassaga, born in 1980 in Kampala, Uganda, has been passionate about drawing and handicrafts since the tender age of ten. His artistic journey took a significant leap forward at fifteen when he illustrated his first book, "guluma ya guzza," which enjoyed immediate success and paved the way for more opportunities in children's book illustrations. Over the years, Kassaga has evolved into a versatile artist, dabbling in illustration, graphic art, sculpture, and painting. His academic background in art and design from Kyambogo University in Kampala provided a solid foundation for his creative endeavors.

Kassaga draws inspiration from music and the social dynamics within his surroundings, allowing his imagination to steer the course of his creations. Birds, a recurring motif in his work, symbolize his experiences and interpretations of human emotions, rendered in an abstract manner. The diversity of bird species, shapes, and colors serves as a continuous source of inspiration for Kassaga, making them a central theme in his artwork.

Describing Kassaga's style as "confetti" aptly captures the vibrant explosion of color patches that characterize his paintings, symbolizing action and movement. His approach to art involves experimenting with various techniques and mediums, always in pursuit of a distinctive flair. When painting, Kassaga immerses himself so deeply in his work that, according to his friends and colleagues, he "forgets everything" else.

Kassaga believes that the viewer plays a crucial role in completing his artworks. The eyes depicted in his paintings are not just about conveying emotions; they serve as an invitation for viewers to engage with and become an integral part of the art.

Since 2010, Kassaga has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in Kampala. Today, he dedicates part of his time to mentoring young emerging artists while continuing his practice at the Halifax Studio in Kampala, alongside Saad Lukwago.
