Lehlogonolo Mashaba
About the Artist
Lehlogonolo Mashaba, a prolific artist hailing from Kwa-Thema, Johannesburg, was born in 1983. His artistic journey began at the Funda Center in 2003, followed by an enriching period at the Artist Proof Studios where he earned a certificate in design and printmaking in 2004. Mashaba's early career was marked by his role as a collaborative printer at Artist Proof Studio, where he honed his skills in intaglio, relief, monotype, and silkscreen techniques. In this capacity, he contributed to the creation of pieces for notable artists such as Marcus Neustetter and Sandile Goje.
Mashaba's artistic footprint extends beyond his individual creations, as he has showcased his work in an array of group exhibitions across South Africa, France, and the United States. A consistent presence at the Johannesburg Art Fair since its inauguration in 2008, his works have been a staple at the Artists Proof Studios' booth. His engagement with the art community is further evidenced by his participation in esteemed art residencies, including the Rendezvous Art Project in France and the Artists Image Resource in America. In 2008, he was one of the select artists invited by the David Krut Workshop and Art Bank to partake in a notable printmaking workshop alongside Vincent Baloyi and others.
Mashaba's contributions to public art are exemplified by a significant painting he created for Pick n Pay at Maponya Mall in Soweto, which was later transformed into a large-scale billboard in the streets of Soweto. His talent and creativity were recognized when he won the prestigious Standard Bank Grahamstown Festival’s Picasso in Africa Mural Competition in 2006, cementing his status as a significant figure in the contemporary art scene.
