Mongezi Ncaphayi

Mongezi Ncaphayi, born in 1983, is distinguished among his peers for the abstract qualities of his work. His lithographic prints, intricate and carefully mapped like stories of evolving landscapes, are described by Ncaphayi as 'making maps to the unknown'. Drawing from the rich history of South Africa's migrant labor and the rhythms of jazz music, his art resonates with a vibrant presence, encapsulating the essence of movement and progression towards a higher state.

Ncaphayi's artistic journey led him to the secluded Atelier le Grand Village near Angoulême, France, where he engaged in the demanding and complex art of stone lithography. This medium allowed for greater experimentation, aligning with Ncaphayi's intuitive approach to art-making. His lithographic monoprints, marked by provocative color and meticulous mark-making, are the result of a deeply meditative process, characterized by the spontaneous addition and subtraction of line and shape. His extensive experience in printmaking has significantly influenced his painting, particularly in his approach to layering.

Based in Johannesburg, Ncaphayi's education includes training at the Artist Proof Studio in Johannesburg and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His talent has garnered international acclaim, with participation in exhibitions across the US, the Netherlands, Portugal, and France, notably the 10th Printmaking Triennial in Chamalières. In 2013, he was honored with the prestigious ABSA L’Atelier Gerard Sekoto Award, leading to residencies in France.
