Shabu Mwangi
About the Artist
Shabu Mwangi, active in the art world since 2003, operates from his studio located in Mukuru, an informal settlement in Eastern Nairobi. He is not only a practicing artist but also plays a pivotal role in his community as the founder and director of the Wajukuu Art Project. Mwangi’s art is a profound exploration of social and cultural disparities, shedding light on the complexities of human interaction across diverse backgrounds. His work, which has been featured in various solo and group exhibitions, extends beyond Nairobi to international venues in London, Essen, and Washington DC.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Mwangi is deeply involved in educational and community-based projects. He has contributed as an art teacher and workshop facilitator collaborating with organizations like HOPE Worldwide and Art2Be in Nairobi, as well as the Waende Suedost Project in Essen, Germany. A significant phase in his career was marked by a five-month IFA fellowship at Schlesische (S27) in Berlin, culminating in "The Stateless," his first solo show since 2015.
Mwangi’s art is driven by a quest for individual and collective healing, delving into the human psyche to uncover the underpinnings of social interactions and the erosion of unity. His recent works, inspired by his time in Berlin and interactions with asylum seekers, narrate the poignant tales of cultural transition, loss of identity, and the quest for recognition in an often indifferent society. Through his art, Shabu Mwangi invites viewers to reflect on the shared human experience, advocating for empathy and understanding in the face of global inequalities.
