Sifiso Gumede
About the Artist
Sifiso Gumede, who was born in 1987, embarked on his artistic journey through studies in silkscreen at the Artist Proof Studio, a creative initiative in the inner city. His collaborative spirit has seen him work alongside a diverse range of artists, both from South Africa and abroad, enriching his practice with a variety of influences and perspectives.
Gumede's art has garnered significant recognition, notably being selected among the top 100 at the Thami Mnyele Fine Art Awards in 2017 and advancing to the Top 15 in 2018, marking him as a rising talent in the contemporary South African art scene. His contributions extend beyond the gallery space, with notable commissions for public art by the Alexandra Museum in 2016 and a significant installation for Massmart+Walmart in 2018.
His works have been showcased in various prestigious venues, including the In Toto Gallery, demonstrating his growing influence and presence in the art world. Gumede is also deeply invested in the cultural and entrepreneurial development of the arts, as evidenced by his participation in cultural entrepreneurship programs at the Goethe Institute.
As a founding member of Gomorallective, a collective of artists based in Alexandra, Gumede is at the forefront of efforts to establish a dedicated center in the township. This initiative aims to provide a vibrant space for artists to freely express themselves and engage with the community, reflecting Gumede's commitment to nurturing the arts within his community and beyond.
