About the Artist
Victor Kalinosi Mutale, born in 1971 in Mungwe, Zambia, is a self-taught artist whose journey into the world of art began in his childhood, inspired by a schoolmate and his creatively inclined sister. His early exposure to drawing came during his primary education under the guidance of Mr. Chimba in Kasama. Despite initially aspiring to join the military, influenced by his uncle's involvement in Zimbabwe's liberation and a deep-seated Pan-Africanist sentiment, Mutale's path took a different turn. His desire to partake in the struggle against apartheid in South Africa was redirected towards artistic pursuits following Nelson Mandela's release, highlighting the political undercurrents that influenced his early life.
Mutale's artistic career formally began in 1995 when he moved to Livingstone and became associated with the Visual Arts Council. His time at the Livingstone Museum was marked by intensive learning and exploration through national workshops over four years. Working across various mediums, Mutale's portfolio encompasses drawing, sculpture, and collage, showcasing his versatility and commitment to his craft. Through his art, Mutale navigates themes that reflect his early aspirations, Pan-Africanist ideals, and the rich tapestry of his cultural heritage.
