ARAK Collection is happy to announce Ticha as our first recipient of the Arak Collection Art Writing Residency Fellowship for 2023.
Barnabas Ticha Muvhuti is a Cape Town based writer and art historian with research interests in the marginalized Black modern artists-cum-teachers in Zimbabwe, and the practices of contemporary artists based on the African continent and its diasporic communities. A member of the RIT research project of The Fletcher School at Tufts University (USA), he writes extensively on the integration experiences of migrants in southern Africa. He has worked as a Gallery Assistant at the AVA Gallery in Cape Town and the Centre for African Studies Gallery (UCT), a Research Assistant and Project Manager at the Centre for Curating the Archive (UCT), and a Research Assistant for the Curatorial Department at the Zeitz MOCAA Museum (helping research for the groundbreaking When We See Us exhibition). He has written several exhibition reviews, opinion pieces, and carried out multiple interviews/conversations with artists and curators. He contributed to the African Artists: From 1882 to Now and ARTTHROB_: 25 Years of Art Writing in South Africa publications. Currently finalizing his doctoral study in Art History at the University Currently Known As Rhodes (UCKAR), Muvhuti is an alumnus of Stellenbosch University, the University of Cape Town, and Midlands State University.
We are looking forward to working with Ticha Muvhuti and through his gaze and art writing practice discover/rediscover the collection, hoping to bring to our audience in 2023 his exhibition and publish the respective catalogue.
