Churchill Ongere

Churchill Ongere, a Nairobi-based visual artist, has been actively contributing to the visual arts scene for approximately six years. His artistic journey is marked by a diverse engagement with various art forms, including poetry, music, and graffiti, before focusing on visual arts. "Suspensions," an ongoing body of work initiated as a personal daily journal in the period leading up to Kenya's 2017 general elections, exemplifies Ongere's approach to art. This series reflects his nuanced response to the socio-political environment of the time, marked by a pervasive sense of tension. Ongere delves into the complex dynamics of power—political, economic, and beyond—without resorting to overtly political or anecdotal imagery. Instead, he employs seemingly innocuous objects, capturing their movements and interactions within both defined and open spaces. Everyday items like chairs, stools, boxes, and fruit, depicted in states of suspension, drifting, or tumbling, serve as open-ended metaphors. The interpretation of these metaphors is left to the viewer, depending on their perspective and how they position themselves in relation to the artwork.
