About the Artist
Joakim Kwaura, born in 1992 in Kianda village, Kibera, has charted a distinctive path in the art world through both formal and informal channels of education. Under the tutelage of Kota Otieno and the mentorship provided by his studio assistant role with Kevo Stero, Kwaura honed his artistic skills and developed a unique style that reflects the vibrant life and environment of Kibera. His involvement with the Maasai Mbili artist collective since 2016 has further enriched his artistic journey.
Kwaura's work is a dynamic blend of Kibera's architectural and natural elements with recycled materials such as basketry, sackcloth, and street signs. This fusion not only highlights the creativity inherent in using found objects but also showcases the lively spirit and resilience of his community.
Beyond his personal artistic endeavors, Kwaura is committed to nurturing the next generation of artists. He actively leads children's workshops and engages in public art initiatives, contributing to the cultural vitality of his community. His contributions to the art world have been recognized in exhibitions at notable venues such as the Circle Art Gallery, Maasai Mbili Artists Collective, Nagenda International Art Academy in Uganda, and the GoDown Art Centre, marking him as a significant figure in East African contemporary art.
