Vusi Khumalo

Vusi Khumalo, born in 1986 in Germiston, South Africa, is a dedicated artist whose journey has taken him across continents. Initially engaged in various occupations, Khumalo's deep-rooted passion for art and his commitment to the African National Congress propelled him to leave apartheid South Africa for ANC camps in Zambia and Tanzania. It was in Tanzania's Dakawa Camp where Khumalo began to immerse himself fully in art, leading to formal education through correspondence with the University of London and further training in Sweden.

Upon his return to South Africa in 1992, Khumalo contributed significantly to the arts as a teacher at the re-established Dakawa Art and Craft Community Centre in Grahamstown. His scholarship to the Konstfack National Art College in Stockholm in 1996 marked a pivotal moment, allowing him to refine his skills in textile printing and art. The subsequent withdrawal of funding for Dakawa led Khumalo to pursue his art full-time, focusing on creating collages that capture the raw realism of South African squatter camps, thereby humanizing these marginalized communities.

Khumalo's work has been showcased in numerous exhibitions, including solo shows at Everard Read in Cape Town and group exhibitions in London, China, and across South Africa. His unique approach to art, combining intense realism with a compassionate perspective on social issues, continues to draw attention both nationally and internationally, solidifying his status as a significant figure in contemporary South African art.
