Wanjohi Antony
About the Artist
Antony Wanjohi, a native of Nairobi's Eastlands, discovered his passion for art during his childhood through sketching cartoon characters and portraits from newsprints and magazines. This early engagement with art blossomed into a serious hobby, shaping his path as a self-taught visual artist. This background affords him the freedom to express himself fluidly with oils and prints, allowing his personal experiences to profoundly influence his work.
The internet has been a pivotal resource for Wanjohi, offering access to a wealth of information and techniques that have contributed to his artistic development. Committed to refining his skills, he approaches each new piece with the intention to grow and evolve as an artist.
Wanjohi is currently focused on a series that casts a spotlight on street vendors or hawkers, a ubiquitous presence in Nairobi's bustling streets and traffic jams. Through his art, he seeks to capture the essence of their daily struggles and perseverance, bringing to life the vibrant spirit of the city's informal economy.
Having participated in several group exhibitions, Wanjohi continues to share his unique perspective with broader audiences. He creates his works from his studio space at the Kuona Artist Collective, formerly known as the Kuona Trust Art Centre, a hub for artistic collaboration and growth in Nairobi.
