Talking Threads

Join us from 5 – 7PM on 7 April 2025 at Liwan Design Studios for the opening of Talking Threads, a temporary exhibition held in collaboration between ARAK Collection, VCUarts and LDS that focuses on the ins-and-outs of textiles, as seen through the lens of five artists based in Namibia: Urte Remmert, Maria Mbereshu, Elizabeth Shinana, Lynette Musukubili, and Lynette Diergaardt.

As with many of the processes involved (weaving, stitching, crocheting, embroidery...), it reflects on the splicing of not only materials but worlds: the singular and collective, local and international, traditional and modern, industrial and handmade. At the same time, it considers the unique position of textiles at the intersections of global trade, industry, and design as an opportunity to rethink some of the assumptions and prejudices that this work often engenders, from the idea of “women’s work” to the heirarchical distinction between art and craft.

The opening will be accompanied by a discussion from 6–7:15PM, titled “Talking Threads: A Global South Salon on Art Making”, with Dr. Sara Bint Moneer Khan (Curator, ARAK Collection); Dr. Neelima Jeychandran (Moderator); Dr. Pallavi Sriram (Associate Professor at Colorado College); and Heba El Kayal (curator, writer, and advisor).

خيوط ناطقه

ندعوكم للانضمام إلينا من الساعة 5 مساءً حتى 7 مساءً في 7 أبريل 2025 في ستوديوهات ليوان للتصميم (Liwan Design Studios) لحضور افتتاح معرض “خيوط ناطقة"، وهو معرض مؤقت يُقام بالتعاون بين مجموعة أراك (ARAK Collection)، جامعة فرجينيا كومنولث كلية فنون التصميم (VCUarts)، وستوديوهات ليوان للتصميم (LDS). يركّز هذا المعرض على تفاصيل وصناعة النسيج، من خلال عدسة خمس فنانات من ناميبيا: أورتي ريميرت، ماريا مبيريشو ، إليزابيث شينانا، لينيت موسوكوبيلي ، ولينيت ديرغاردت .

كما هو الحال مع العديد من العمليات المتضمّنة (مثل النسج، الخياطة، الحياكة، التطريز…)، يعكس هذا المعرض تداخل ليس فقط المواد، بل العوالم المختلفة: الفردي والجماعي، المحلي والدولي، التقليدي والمعاصر، الصناعي والحرفي اليدوي.

وفي الوقت نفسه، يسلّط الضوء على الموقع الفريد للنسيج عند تقاطعات التجارة العالمية، والصناعة، والتصميم، كفرصة لإعادة التفكير في بعض الافتراضات والأحكام المسبقة التي كثيرًا ما ترافق هذا النوع من العمل، بدءاً من فكرة “عمل النساء” وصولاً إلى التمييز الهرمي بين الفن والحرفة.

وسيصاحب الافتتاح جلسة نقاشية من الساعة 6 مساءً حتى 7:15 مساءً تحت عنوان: “خيوط متحدثة: صالون الجنوب العالمي في صناعة الفن” بمشاركة:
